If you have crooked teeth or misaligned jaws, you probably want to correct those issues. However, you may be discouraged by the prospect of wearing unsightly metal orthodontic appliances on your teeth for a couple of years in order to achieve that goal.

Enter Invisalign, a solution that helps you straighten your teeth without obscuring your smile for months on end. This innovative system is based on the same principles that inform traditional orthodontics, so it is highly effective. However, Invisalign offers patients numerous advantages in comparison to standard braces.

To learn more about Invisalign and whether it might be right for you, call our office to schedule an evaluation.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign straightens the teeth using a progressive series of clear, removable plastic trays to apply specific forces to the teeth and reposition them. The patient swaps out trays as directed by Dr. Nathanson, approximately every two weeks.

Keep in mind that the patient takes on a significant amount of responsibility when using Invisalign. Patients must follow Dr. Nathanson’s instructions for switching trays, as well as take care to wear the trays for the recommended amount of time, at least 22 hours each day.

It’s important for patients to use the trays as directed in order to achieve the desired results within the anticipated time frame.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign offers patients a number of benefits:

  • Appearance: The Invisalign trays are barely noticeable, and patients can see results in real time rather than waiting for braces to be removed for the big reveal.
  • Comfort: Invisalign trays eliminate the brackets with sharp corners and wires that can break free and poke the soft oral tissues, causing cuts and scrapes.
  • Convenience: Invisalign trays can be removed at mealtime and while brushing and flossing your teeth, which allows you to stick to your regular routines.
  • Treatment Timeline: Patients who choose Invisalign may be able to complete treatment in as little as twelve months, although this aspect of treatment varies from case to case.

Comparing And Contrasting Invisalign And Traditional Orthodontics

Invisalign and traditional orthodontic treatment approaches differ in several important ways, including the following.

Appliances Used

Invisalign uses clear plastic trays to reposition the teeth, while traditional orthodontics uses brackets and wires that intrude on the smile’s appearance.

Duration of Treatment

Invisalign can be completed in as little as 12 months, depending on the patient’s situation. In contrast, traditional orthodontics take at least 18 months to move the teeth, and even longer in many cases.

Frequency of Office Visits

Invisalign patients are essentially adjusting the appliances on their own when switching trays, so they need to come to the office less frequently (every 1-2 months) than patients receiving standard orthodontic treatments.

Patient Responsibility

Patients take on more responsibility with Invisalign than with standard orthodontics because they need to follow Dr. Nathanson’s directions closely in order to get the desired results.

FAQs about Invisalign

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an innovative orthodontic treatment system that helps patients straighten their smiles without wearing clunky braces. Instead, Invisalign repositions the teeth using a series of clear plastic trays. The trays are designed to be worn at least 22 hours each day and to be used in a specific progression so that the teeth will move in particular ways. The trays can be removed at mealtime and for oral hygiene purposes for maximum convenience.

Is Invisalign right for me?

Invisalign is appropriate for patients in a variety of cases, even with complex issues like severe crowding or malocclusions. In order to determine whether Invisalign is the right choice for your specific case, you should schedule an evaluation with Dr. Nathanson. At that appointment, Dr. Nathanson can examine your smile and discuss your goals with you in order to make a treatment recommendation.

How long do I wear Invisalign?

The duration of your treatment with Invisalign will depend on certain aspects of your case. Some patients may only need to wear Invisalign trays for a year in order to straighten their smiles, but those with more complex problems are likely to have longer treatment timelines. Keep in mind that you also will influence the treatment timeline. If you follow Dr. Nathanson’s instructions for wearing your trays, treatment will progress as expected. If you don’t, the treatment may take longer than anticipated initially.

Is Invisalign covered by insurance?

Dental insurance may cover a portion of orthodontic treatment, particularly if the patient is under 18 years old. However, insurance policies vary in the amount of coverage they offer, if any at all. Our experienced office staff will work closely with you to maximize any insurance coverage you may have and assist in filing any necessary claims. We also accept a variety of payment options, including payment plans, so that you can incorporate any out-of-pocket costs associated with treatment into your budget.
